Rural Generalist Leadership for Clinicians Program
The QRGP is pleased to continue its partnership with RACMA to deliver the Rural Generalist Leadership for Clinicians Program in 2023. The Program has been developed to enable medical clinicians to enhance their performance and build their confidence and competence in leadership and management in a safe and confidential setting. This program offering has been specifically customised to meet the needs of Queensland’s current and future rural generalist leaders.
Qualification
Successful completion of the Rural Generalist Leadership for Clinicians Program is an approved pathway to apply to elect to Associate Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (AFRACMA).
Those wishing to pursue the full Fellowship in medical administration with RACMA may apply to undertake the Fellowship Training Program. RACMA’s Recognition of Prior Learning and Experience (RPLE) process enables applicants to seek advanced standing as a result of prior learning and experience. More information can be found here.
Program information
The Program comprises interactive sessions, case studies and self-development assessment activities designed to provide participants with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in medical management and leadership. The Program will cover content specifically designed for rural and remote practice in Queensland.
Six study themes will be explored including:
- Professionalism, leadership and culture
- Understanding our healthcare system
- Clinical governance and medico-legal awareness
- Medical workforce management and engagement
- Leading strategy and change
- Financial governance
The six key study themes will be addressed through eight topics. Each topic will incorporate self-directed learning, face to face sessions and associated assessment tasks.
The eight program topics are:
- MBTI/Adaptive Leadership
- Practical Clinical Governance
- Risk and Data Management
- System Governance
- Financial Governance
- Strategy and Change
- Medical Workforce Management
- Change and Culture in Healthcare
The program includes four assessment tasks. These are:
- Development of a Professional Development Plan (PDP)
- Clinical Governance Reflection
- Medical Workforce Management Reflection
- Resubmission of the PDP including a reflection on leadership and management goals
Assessment tasks are scheduled throughout the program and must be submitted for successful completion of the program.
Eligibility
Applicants must possess:
- Current medical registration in Australia
- A minimum of three years direct patient care
- Be in good standing with their employer and other medical specialty colleges
- An interest in medical leadership and management and/or currently leading clinical departments
Applicants may express interest in being considered for a Queensland Rural Generalist Program sponsored position. While not mandatory, current Queensland Health employment and attainment of GP fellowship qualifications will be well regarded.
Duration and commitment
The Rural Generalist Leadership for Clinicians Program will be delivered over six months from November 2023 to May 2024. All residential workshops will be held at Sofitel Brisbane as outlined below:
Residential 1:
Friday 24 November: 9am – 5pm
Saturday 25 November: 9am – 4pm
Residential 2:
Thursday 8 February: 1230pm – 5pm
Friday 9 February: 9am – 4pm
Saturday 10 February: 9am – 2pm
Residential 3:
Thursday 18 April: 9 – 4pm
Friday 19 April: 9 – 4pm
Saturday 20 April: 9am – 2pm
Enrolment in the Program requires commitment to complete all program requirements as soon as possible and no later than twelve months after commencement.
Participants need to accommodate the following time commitment to complete the program:
- Residentials as outlined.
- Independent learning, including the completion of four assessment tasks: approximately 40 hours.
Note: number of hours may vary due to participant learning style.
Inclusions and exclusions
Program fees are $12,950 per person. Day catering for residential workshops is included.
Self-funded participants will be required to make payment directly to RACMA. The QRGP will pay course fees to RACMA for successful QRGP sponsored applicants.
The following exclusions apply for all applicants:
- Travel to and from Brisbane to attend residential workshops at Sofitel Brisbane
- Accommodation whilst attending workshops
- Leave provisions
- Backfill provisions
- AFRACMA application fee
- Conferment ceremony travel and accommodation
- Ongoing RACMA membership costs
